It’s a fun and quirky way to display your icons though I did encounter some problems with the software. Overall Objectdock does a great job of helping to clear up your desktop and make it more presentable. You can easily change the amount of zoom and how the animations work in the options, as well as the quality of the animations to help slower machines that may not be able to cope with the graphics. The default program comes with plenty of themes to suit your needs and there are hundreds more themes and skins to download from the internet. When it comes to customising your docks there are lots of options to choose from.
I put my games dock on the side of the screen as you can pick between horizontal and vertical docks. I for example use one dock for software and another separate one for all of my games. This feature is very useful for organising your shortcuts and keeping your desktop tidy. With the plus version as I mentioned before you can use more than one dock. I myself prefer to keep the Windows taskbar as I didn’t like switching between windows with object dock but It works very well, utilising window previews much like the Windows 7 taskbar. The full version of Object Dock could theoretically be used to completely replace your windows taskbar altogether and even comes with options to hide the taskbar if you wish to do so. Object Dock from Stardock is available in a free version but there is also a ‘Plus’ version for $19.95 which sports a lot more features such as the ability to create as many docks as you like and to also show your system tray icons in the dock too. I’ve recently give the custom icon management software Object Dock a go on my Windows 7 machine and despite not being a fan of the Apple dock I’ve found that Object Dock has helped to keep my desktop free of clutter and also look quite nifty at the same time.
